Episode 40 Wed, 10 Nov 2010
The Youthwork Summit: In the aftermath of the inaugural Youthwork Summit event in London, co-founders Chris Curtis and Martin Saunders (Matt Summerfield was still on his pointless Lausanne jolly) talk through the day, picking out their personal highlights and groaning over their 'areas for improvement'. Plus, the location for Youthwork Summit II - the revenge, is inadvertantly announced...

Episode 39 Wed, 06 Oct 2010
With guest Fuzz Kitto: Why do a degree in youth work, when you can simply listen to this episode of Youthwork the Podcast? Sit back and listen at least twice, as the bearded wonder talks about his three 'conversions', the trends that will shape the church's future, and much more. Also includes questions from vacuous non-intellectual, Martin Saunders.

Episode 38 Fri, 24 Sep 2010
With guests Rend Collective Experiment. Get in the mood for the Youthwork Summit with Rend Collective Experiment, the Belfast worship band who are having an incredible year on both sides of the Atlantic. Includes two brilliant live tracks, recorded at our London studios.

Episode 37 Wed, 01 Sep 2010
With guest Patrick Regan. Martin Saunders enjoys an extraordinary conversation with Patrick Regan, the CEO and founder of London-based Christian youth agency XLP. As well as offering practical insights into how churches can intervene in the lives of dispossessed young people and offer them a new hope for the future, he tells the uplifting and harrowing story of his visits to Trench Town, Jamaica, one of the gang crime capitals of the world. If you only ever listen to one Youthwork podcast, make sure it's this one.

Episode 36 Fri, 06 Aug 2010
With guests Tom and Donna Wade, and Yanah Nightingale. Tom takes over hosting duties for his long awaited return from almost dying. He's brought his wife with him, and she happens to be an expert in teenage self-harm, and also much better looking than he is. Along with host-turned guest Martin Saunders, they're joined by emerging bright young thing Yanah Nightingale, an intern with Onelife and just about the smartest teenager we've ever met. It's a bit of a rambling mess this one to be honest, but then that's why you love it. We hope.

Episode 35 Fri, 23 Jul 2010
The Youthwork Summit episode. Youthwork podcaster Martin Saunders, Urban Saint Matt Summerfield and 'bloke from Luton' Chris Curtis talk about their collective vision for the Youthwork Summit - a new kind of youth ministry event launching in October this year. Listen in the opposite of awe as they explain what the day will involve, why you should go, and how you too can get miracle abs. For more info on the summit, and to book tickets, visit:

Episode 34 Tue, 13 Jul 2010
With guests Amy Stock and Brad Hawkes. Martin is joined by Youthwork magazine's guest editor Amy Stock to talk about the special August issue, which has a schools work theme. Together they talk to Brad Hawkes, Director of schools ministry organisation New Generation, to talk about why every youth worker is a schools worker, even if they never set foot in a classroom or assembly hall. Plus - Brad reveals his shocking lack of knowledge about his homeland, Martin fails with yet another accent attempt, and Tom presents his most inexplicably extraordinary song yet.

Episode 33 Wed, 07 Jul 2010
With guest Andy Wilson. Martin meets Andy Wilson, Creative director of Rolltherock - a Harrogate-based youth ministry - and a veteran youth worker who is also totally blind. They discuss their jolly outing to the houses of parliament, the unexpected advantages of being a blind youth worker, and the sexualisation of youth culture. Plus, at last someone mentions the elephant in the room, namely Martin, who needs to go on a diet immediately.

Episode 32 Tue, 29 Jun 2010
With guests Susie Mapledoram and Martin Thompson. Martin, Sarah and intern Alex meet Susie Mapledoram and Martin Thompson, Diocesan youth officers in Manchester and Exeter respectively. They have fun digging up ancient scandal, talk briefly about youth ministry, and ask Tom to do the impossible: merge Frankie Goes to Hollywood and orthodox Christian thought.

Episode 31 Tue, 22 Jun 2010
With guest Ian Henderson. Martin meets comedy genius Ian Henderson to talk about urban fridges, special trains, and the Shine Your Light project with which he's involved. Ian tells some of the Message Trust story, Martin reflects on Britain's Got Talent, and newly-married Tom is back at last with another song after his near-death experience. Funny stuff.

Episode 30 Fri, 04 Jun 2010
With guests Dave Newton and Kyle Armstrong. Martin meets Dave Newton and his trusty sidekick Kyle for almost an hour of Youth for Christ-related fun. Wince as Martin apologises for his own ineptitude! Ponder as 'the Newt' makes a thoughtful defence of YFC's extravagant mission statement! Coo in expectation with further revelations about the London Youthwork Summit... Plus, did anyone seriously think we'd make it to 30?!

Episode 29 Mon, 17 May 2010
With guest Francis Chan. The extraordinary Francis Chan drops in to talk about living simply, re-engaging the Holy Spirit, and saying no to Christian celebrity. Clearly he's far too high-profile for us and had got the wrong recording studio, but Youthwork the Podcast took full advantage, parachuting in veteran Holy Trinity Brompton Youth Worker Matt Costley (and his entourage) to conduct an in-depth interview before the jet lag wore off and he realised where he was. Oh, by the way, this one is ACE.

Episode 28 Tue, 11 May 2010
With guest Mark Ritchie. Mark Ritchie is widely regarded as one of the UK's best youth communicators. Unfortunately, that didn't prepare him for Ben Cantelon's newly instigated take-no-prisoners Bible quiz. Find out what happened when Mark talked World Cup predictions with Sarah 'statto' Wynter, went for a chilli pizza with Martin 'Phal' Saunders, and took part in possibly our funniest ever podcast. Listen, then tell your friends!

Episode 27 Fri, 23 Apr 2010
With guest Ben Cantelon. Martin and Sarah meet popular worship warbler and teenage pin-up Ben Cantelon, to talk about youth worship, redeeming the football chant, and the rise of the Worship Central phenomenon. Plus, Martin tells his only Rowan Williams anecdote, Sarah impersonates Magnus Magnusson, and Ben loses his head battling a giant imaginary duck...

Episode 26 Thu, 25 Mar 2010
With guest Becca Dean. Martin is flying solo as he meets Becca Dean, who didn't used to be in Hollyoaks, and certainly doesn't look anything like Bill Bailey. She's the youth worker at Carpenter's something something something church in Chorleywood, and has just written her first book. By way of congratulation, and to help reassure her that she doesn't look like a hirsute male comedian, Tom presents his greatest musical achievement ever. Plus some discussion about Christian youth work.

Episode 25 Wed, 10 Mar 2010
With guest Matt Wilson. Martin and Sarah meet Matt Wilson of Eden Networks - a national extension of Manchester's highly-regarded Eden project. Matt talks about incarnational youth work, how every urban context is unique, and why 80s band Kajagoogoo are his role models. Shockingly, this is our 25th podcast; less shockingly, we forgot to mark it in some sort of meaningful way.

Episode 24 Fri, 26 Feb 2010
With guest Russ Rook. Martin and Sarah meet Russ Rook - former Director of Alove and founder of community transformation charity Chapel St. In this episode, Russ talks candidly about his secret past as a Parisian go-go dancer, Martin tries to beat the world record for eating Wotsits in a minute, and Sarah does an uncanny impression of rapper Jay-Z. Plus, some stuff about the church's central role in the future of Britain's communities.

Episode 23 Wed, 10 Feb 2010
With guest Stephen Baldwin. Martin and Sarah see all their dreams come true as their hero - Celebrity Big Brother star Stephen Baldwin - drops in for a chat. Glow with warmth as he tells the story of his miraculous conversion! Gasp as he decides between High School Musical and a punch in the face! Dance as he instructs Tom to write a song about Barney Rubble! Trust us: you will not want to miss this.

Episode 22 Mon, 01 Feb 2010
With guest Andy Burns. Martin and Sarah meet Andy Burns, Director of the East to West trust, to talk about getting into schools and the forthcoming gender lecture series that he's involved in. Plus, because he said he was so happy to talk about sex and relationships, we ask him to address one of the major areas of struggle for teenagers. That wiped the smile off his face.

Episode 21 Wed, 13 Jan 2010
With guest Graeme Hodge. Sarah and Martin are joined by Graeme Hodge, a man with the most important job title of all our guests so far. As Deputy Director for International Development at the Salvation Army (told you), he's able to fill us in on the amazing success of an HIV/AIDS campaign which many youth workers were involved in. Plus, the team talk Avatar, and Tom wonders what might have happened if the Village People had taken a different muse.

Episode 20 - Christmas Special Wed, 16 Dec 2009
The Christmas special. Velvet-voiced quizmaster Tom Wade is back in the studio for our Christmas special, putting Martin and Sarah through their paces in a series of Christmas-themed quiz rounds. Episode 19 Wed, 18 Nov 2009
With guests The 29th Chapter. Martin and Sarah meet rappers and schools workers Kev and Dave from hip hop act 29th Chapter to discuss Old Skool, Nu Skool and Playskool. Highlights include: Kev does killer Rob Bell impression; Sarah shows off her encyclopaedic knowledge of 1980s rap; and Dave and Martin face off over the merits of RnB. Plus some youth work-related content - we promise.

Episode 18 Wed, 14 Oct 2009
With guest Jason Gardner. Author and lecturer Jason Gardner is our guest as we talk about discipleship, generational disconnection and 2009's Youthwork the Conference. More significantly, Martin finds some sort of weird sound FX machine, and completely undermines all the worthwhile intellectual discussion. This episode comes with added Benny Hill.

Episode 17 Mon, 28 Sep 2009
With guest Tom Wade. After a seemingly eternal absence, Tom Wade returns to the studio to turn guest. Not because our actual guest dropped out at the last minute or anything like that, but because he is an interesting and important person in his own right. Tom talks from experience about the life of a youth ministry student and reviews the latest films, then subjects our unsuspecting web editor Simon to the quick quiz. Please note: if you've previously complained that we witter on too much about the unimportant details of our personal lives, do not listen to Youthwork the Podcast: Episode 17.

Episode 16 Wed, 16 Sep 2009
With guest Jon Langford. After an extended summer break, the Youthwork team return with less in-jokes and more youth work content - just like you demanded! This week, Veteran youth worker Jon Langford talks mentoring and group dynamics; Martin takes over quizmaster duties, and Tom makes an appearance from beyond the grave.

Episode 15 Thu, 04 Jun 2009
With guest Tim Hughes. World-renowned worship leader Tim Hughes, co-host of some other podcast, joins the Youthwork team for an extended show. Tom bonds with Tim over a recent CD review, and is then challenged to perform his own heavy-metal cover of 'Happy Day', while Martin shares a tender moment with the unrequited friend-love of his life. Plus, Tim reveals the ropiest song he's ever recorded, answers calls to 'man up' his music, and invites us all to punch him in the face.

Episode 14 Wed, 27 May 2009
With guests Yfriday. Tom gets starstruck as he interviews Christian rock-worship superstars Yfriday - in a Yfriday t-shirt. How cool is he? Discussions include stories about Tom's 'mam', toilet phones, the Child Catcher and singer Ken Riley's mega-hit, that one that goes 'Strength will rise when we da da dum dum dum.' Meanwhile, Martin and the band get off on the wrong foot and take most of the podcast to recover, after Martin manages to sound insincere about the new album, tries to start a Oasis vs Blur-style fight between Yfriday and Delirious, and finally makes an effort to split the band up. Also features up-to-the-minute football chat, including an important prediction about the fate of Newcastle United.

Episode 13 Tue, 19 May 2009
With guest Rich Wilson. Rich Wilson, leader of Fusion, pops in to talk about their new Studentlinkup resource, grills Martin about the recent Youthwork conference venue news, and demonstrates great creativity in devising our first ever listener competition.

Episode 12 Mon, 18 May 2009
With guest Greg Downes. Martin, Tom and Sarah are joined by Greg Downes, a popular Ricky Gervais impersonator and principal of the Watford School of Leadership. Greg talks about his past work with young offenders, students and Stephen Merchant, and shows an unnerving composure when answering Tom's latest quick quiz.

Episode 11 Tue, 28 Apr 2009
With guest Chris Curtis (again!). Demonstrating their up-to-the-minute grasp of popular culture, Martin, Sarah, Tom and guest Chris Curtis discuss The Crystal Maze, Titanic (spoiler alert), and new Sandra Bullock movie The Net. They also talk a little bit about the new Youthwork charter, 'We Love Our Youthworker', Chris eats his lunch, and Martin loses track of which episode number this is.

Episode 10 - Easter Special Thu, 09 Apr 2009
With guests Chris Curtis and Greg Downes. Believing they're now established enough to warrant an Easter Special, the Youthwork podcast team present: 'Youthwork the Conference - The Easter Special'. Join quizmaster Tom as he puts two predictably-captained teams through their general knowledge paces. Joining Martin is Chris Curtis, youth and schools work pioneer and an expert on marine biology. On Sarah's team, Ricky-Gervais-lookalike Greg Downes is the principal of the Watford leadership institute and a leading authority on diets. Who will win? Who cares? You do. Listen now.

Episode 9 Tue, 17 Mar 2009
With guests Phil and Glyn from Soul Survivor, Watford. Martin is back in the saddle as the team get trendy and sit down with two of the youth work team from Soul Survivor church in Watford. Listen in and meet Phil Shaw, who isn't very academic but is very pretty, and Glyn, who strikes a careful balance between the two. Also this episode: Tom and Martin recreate a classic scene from Watchmen, Tom puts a UK Grime track in your ear (one time), and Sarah continues to be the one source of sensible questioning. Warning - contains McNutts.

Episode 8 Fri, 06 Mar 2009
With guest Becky Johnson. Team Youthwork has to cope without it's leader in this episode as Sarah and Tom sit down with Becky Johnson to talk about social networking with young people, a youth bus, pancakes and the Oscars. Other highlights include Sarah describing herself miming going to the toilet and Tom's breakdown due to lack of caffeine.

Episode 7 Wed, 18 Feb 2009
With guest Pete Maidment. Winchester DYO Pete Maidment tells the team about the new Youthwork Lectures, Tom makes an abortive effort at Gilbert and Sullivan, and Martin apologises for offending Scotland. Episode 6 Tue, 03 Feb 2009
With guest Kiera Phyo. Kiera Phyo, head of Tearfund's youth department, explains a fantastic new free resource; Tom sings bluegrass through a hat; Sarah sneaks out halfway through and Martin says goodbye to everyone. It can only be Youthwork the podcast (19th most popular Christian podcast in the world and sinking fast).

Episode 5 Thu, 22 Jan 2009
With guest Anna Macshane. Sarah makes a welcome return as we welcome Kingston-based youth and student worker Anna Macshane to the podcast. Despite being the only speaking human we could find at short notice, she turns out to have views on everything from women in leadership to the return of Jack Bauer in 24. Plus, Tom raps, explains what a 'ladar' is, and proves to be the worst foreign accent impersonator since Dick van Dyke.

Episode 4 Thu, 08 Jan 2009

This episode features a discussion on the big news stories of 2008 that affected Youthwork, as well as lots of talk about the good and bad films of the last 12 months.
